Sarpa Yoga is also known as Sarpa Dosha or Naga Dosha. It is caused due to wrath of the Serpent God in previous birth. Due to Sarpa Yoga, marriages are delayed or ruined, Progeny may be denied, miscarriages/Abortion will occur.
Sarpa Yoga (Sarp Dosh or Naga Dosha) is different from Kal Sarpa Yoga / Dosha (KSY). Many astrologers/writers have written about Kal Sarpa Yoga/Dosha. Here i will not talk about Kal Sarpa Yoga/Dosha but only about Sarpa /Naga Dosha.
Naga Dosha in the ancient tradition was caused from a previous birth when either you or your ancestors killed or harmed snakes instead of revering and respecting them. Snakes, called “Naga”, are mystical and powerful. They can grant you great boons or curses respectively. Snakes are also closely associated with Kundalini and many forms of the Goddess. Vindictiveness against or mistreatment of women, particularly spiritual women in practice of enlightenment or other psychic pursuits, also generate a Snake curse on you and future generations. Severe negativity or blasphemy against Goddess worship can likewise cause Naga Dosha.
Sarpa Dosha delays marriage and also delays progeny/children. Let us examine planetary combinations in the birth chart indicating Sarpa Dosh / Naga Dosha.
When Ketu or Rahu is placed in 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th or 8th house Indicate Sarpa Dosha / Naga Dosha.
Women suffering from Sarpa/Naga Dosha will have children after conducting Pooja of Naga Devatha.
When Ketu or Rahu is placed in 1st or 2nd House, Indicate delay in marriage, If the person is married, creates problems in family life and sometimes leads to divorce or separation.
Ketu or Rahu in 5th house leads to delay in getting children/Progeny and also leads to abortions. Also Rahu aspect on 5th house also indicates Sarpa/Naga Dosha. Naga Prathistapana at any Naga temple should be done for getting children.
Ketu or Rahu in 7th house Leads to problems in family life, misunderstandings, frequent quarrels, wife/Husband will have Health problems etc.
Ketu or Rahu in 8th house Indicate Health problems of wife or Husband, skin disease etc. The person suffering from Sarpa/Naga dosha will see Snakes/Serpents in their dream. That is a clear Indication of Sarpa dosha.
While this explains the source of Naga Dosha, it is understood that you are not the same person now. Nevertheless, the effects from your prior births or prior generations are impacting you now.

Sarpa Dosha Remedies and Mantra :
It is widely believed that the childless couples will be blessed with a child, if they observe the Naga Panchami vratra. Those who read the story from the Sarpa Satra or Sarpa Yaga from Mahabharata on the day of Nagapanchami after worshipping Sarpas will be greatly relieved from the problems due to Sarpa dosha.
The impact of Sarpa dosha is so severe that it may create early curtailment of wedlock, by death of spouse or divorce, delay in progency or no progency and unexpected accidents.
Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Mantra
Apart from this, few temples in India like Kukke Subrahmanya in Karnataka, Mopidevi and Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh offer special remedial rituals for nullifying Sarpa Dosha.
In mahabharata, Sage Astika saved Sarpa race from being extinct during Sarpa Yagam.
One needs to read and recollect that episode is useful for those effected by Sarpa Dosha.
Effects of Sarpa Dosha
Some of the effects of Sarpa Dosha are :
Frequent abortions.
Physically or mentally challenged kids being born.

Ketu follows Rahu while giving effects of Sarpa Dosha.
Reasons for Sarpa Dosha or Naga Dosha in Horoscope
Vedic Astrology gives multiple reasons why Sarpa dosha is formed in a horoscope.
Main reasons are occult or black magic activities done by ancestors and self made mistakes in previous lives.
Sarpa Dosha or Naga Dosha does not mean just killing snakes or reptiles.
Even killing a unborn child (abortion) will have same effect as sperm is considered similar to snake (its shape and crawling method).
Ketu controls life after death (right from when death starts in present life till entering into a womb for next life).
To determine Sarpa Dosha in a horoscope, above symptoms (effects) can be helpful and then personal horoscope along with horoscopes of family members will be helpful.
In mahabharata, Sage Astika saved Sarpa race from being extinct during Sarpa Yagam.
One needs to read and recollect that episode is useful for those effected by Sarpa Dosha.

Ashlesha Bali[edit]
Ashlesha Bali Puja or Ashlesha Bali pooja is one of the important Kaalasarpa dosha pujas performed at Kukke Subramanya temple. Lord Subramanya is known as the protector from Kaalasarpa dosha and Kuja dosha. Kukke Sri Kshetra temple is the most popular for Sarpadosha puja. Aslesha Bali puja is performed on Aslesha nakshatra in each month.
Aslesha Bali puja in Kukke Subramaya temple will be performed in two shifts – 7:00 am and 9.15 am. Those who want to perform this puja need to report for sankalpa with Purohita inside the temple either at 7:00 am or 9.15 am. After the completion of Homa Poornahuthi Puja, devotees will get prasadam. Devotees believe Shravana masa, Karthika masa, and Margashira masa are the most auspicious months to perform Aslesha bali puja at Kukke temple.[2]
Sarpa Samskara / Sarpa Dosha[edit]
Sarpa Samskara / Sarpa Dosha is one of the poojas performed by devotees at this temple to get rid of the sarpa dosha (according to belief, a person, either in this birth or in any of his previous births, could be afflicted by the sarpa (serpent) dosha (curse) either knowingly or unknowingly, through many ways). Persons who are afflicted with this dosha are advised by astrologers / horoscope writers to perform this pooja for their own wellbeing. Pooja can be done either by the afflicted person himself if he is male and married, or through a priest. This is because the pooja involves rituals similar to those done while performing shrartham (funeral rites). Sarpa Samskara seva devotees are required to be present for two days. The seva is performed during the daytime, with no particular poojas in the evening. Food arrangements will be made for these devotees by the temple devasthanam, for up to four persons per seva.
Due to the widespread belief in the snake god in Tulunad region of Karnataka and Kerala, this pooja is performed by people of all faiths.
Naga Dosha and Sarpa Badhaka Remedy

We live in a time period where we have a large impact upon the planet. It is important that the remedies we perform have a large impact. There are various rituals performed for nāga doṣas. Understanding the reason for those rituals, we can understand modern alternatives that have a huge impact for the whole planet.
Traces of tree and serpent worship have been found in all cultures across the globe. The snake, its connotations and powers has been propitiated or worshipped throughout time. This is a basic aspect of the collective human consciousness. Taking the collective understanding of the snake in various cultures and metaphoric interpretation of sarpas and nāgas we can gain a deeper understanding of nāga doṣa and sarpa-bādhaka.
The fourth house remedial measures, as well as the causes for sarpa-bādhaka given by Harihara, show the link between the sacred groves and the nāgas. When Rāhu is in the fourth house and associated with the bādhakeśa then the installation of a citra kūṭa stone is indicated. A citra kūṭa is an image of a nāga or the nāga king which is placed by a large tree or in a sacred grove (sarpa kavu) where the sarpas/nāgas are said to live. These groves were often in the south-western direction. Traditionally large trees were always given space and worshiped. They were a habitat for animals, birds and insects (and ethereal beings)- an entire ecosystem alone. The sacred groves were parts of large properties or temples that were left undisturbed. Often they were perennial water sources. They relate in some way to modern day nature reserves, or watersheds. The ensuing remedies also relate to environmental remediation.
Rāhu in his Viṣṇu form is the one who saves the earth. In the negative, Rāhu becomes disturbed when one either destroys the environment or has destroyed natural habitat in a past life. The nāgas and sarpas can be seen as nature energies, and as the protectors of the nature spirits in the natural environments. Nature is a powerful force with many faces that needs to be respected. Propitiation of the nāgas is often seen as snake worship (ophiolatry), but it can be seen more as the propitiation of nature, its forces, and its protectors.
When Rāhu is placed in the lagna and associated with the bādhaka then the remedial measures are to offer milk and water to the image of the nāga. This image is found by an old tree or in a sacred grove in India. In the west, some type of nature shrine which gives respects to the nature element can be used instead. Rāhu placed in the seventh or twelfth and connected to bādhaka indicates the offering of song and music. This was normally done at the nāga image or in the sacred grove. The propitiatory rites to be offered when Rāhu is in the sixth, eighth or tenth are also best done in these places.
When Rāhu is in a cara rāśi the cause for the serpents anger is the destruction of serpent eggs. The traditional remedy is the donation of small golden eggs to the deity. The number of golden eggs relates to the bādhaka house; eleven eggs for moveable lagnas, nine eggs for fixed lagnas, and seven eggs for dual lagnas. This may be possible for some people in certain spaces, but it is not a convenient remedy for the majority of the planet, and for many people, it is strange and uncomfortable. In a modern interpretation, the cara rāśi represents the destruction of ecosystem breeding grounds, and one can donate to an organization which works to improve this part of the environment. The number of golden eggs would indicate the proper amount to give in donation. My clients that make donations, have seen quick results. One can follow the traditional remedy, a modern interpretation or do both.
MoveableDestruction of serpent’s eggsDualKilling young serpentsFixedCutting trees near serpents abode
When Rāhu is in a dual sign it indicates the killing of the young serpents. The traditional remedy is to offer small golden snakes in the number according to the lagna. The modern interpretation of this is that the karma relates to destruction of ecosystem where the young animals, serpents, birds, etc. mature and live. The modern remedy would be the support of conservation programs. Rāhu in a cara rāśi would support a project to raise the young in captivity to be released into nature, while in a dual rāśi they would support protection and remediation programs.
Rāhu in a fixed sign indicates the serpents are angry due to the cutting of trees (inanimate nature destroyed), and the traditional remedy is the replanting of trees. In the traditional sacred groves, whenever a tree was removed another tree was planted right away. In the modern world there are many reforestation projects and other projects where one can donate to or plant trees themselves if space allows.
Harihara gives further indications for the destruction of the environment (nāgālaya) which will later cause problems for the individual. If Mars is in kendra to Rāhu the reason for trouble is the destruction of the serpents abodes. This includes the levelling of forests, burning or cutting trees without replanting fresh trees, taking the earth, or levelling the anthills. If Saturn or Gulika are in kendra to Rāhu the abode of serpents has become unclean with trash and human waste. Low minded people hang out in the area, elephants trample the earth, or people freely plough and use the land for agriculture. The remedial indications are to keep the sacred groves well guarded, clean, plant fresh trees and do regular purification rites to the area. In modern day interpretation, one should properly keep their sacred grove if it exists. Otherwise, one should donate to parks and help ensure their upkeep.
Donating to organizations that benefit the environment according to the nature of the nāga doṣas is a remedy that can be done by anyone of any religion or faith, and the remedy is implicit within Jyotish scripture. This is also a very beneficial remedy for Rāhu problems in gneral when person will not do mantra or pūjā. It is best to donate regularly; setting up a payment program where money is given each month. Otherwise one must remember to donate monthly. I have collected a few organizations that I recommend for donation.
